Tintoretto (1518 – 1594) was a Venetian painter, one of the greatest exponents of Venetian painting and art. The nickname "Tintoretto" comes from the profession of his father, a dyer of silk fabrics. Because of his enormous energy and strong character he was nicknamed the furious or the terrible.

Considered one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance and of all time, he knew how to continue, together with Paolo Veronese, the extraordinary international success of Venetian painting, even after the death of Titian.

Famous for the great depth of perspective in his works, he preferred the use of dark backgrounds to reach the light, creating extraordinary chiaroscuro effects that would later be fundamental to the art of Caravaggio and El Greco.
