Giorgione

Giorgione, or Giorgio da Castelfranco, pseudonym of Giorgio (about 1478 – 1510), was a painter of the Republic of Venice, an important exponent of the Venetian school. Despite the great popularity of the artist during his lifetime, he is one of the most enigmatic figures in the history of painting. He did not sign any works and the reconstruction of his catalogue, as well as the determination of the iconographic meanings of many of his works, is the subject of numerous debates and controversies among scholars.

He was active in the Venetian painting scene for just over ten years, marking it with a sudden but dazzling appearance, which later acquired legendary proportions in artistic historiography. His activity certainly marked a transcendental turning point in Venetian painting.

The nickname "Giorgione" was probably linked to his physical stature, his height. He was always an elusive and mysterious artist, to the point that he seemed to Gabriele D'Annunzio "more of a myth than a man."
