The first Procuratie Vecchie were built in the 12th century under the command of Doge Sebastiano Ziani to house the offices and house of the Procurators of San Marco.
Part of the original building can be seen in Giovanni Bellini's painting Procession in St. Mark's Square, which is located in the Gallerie dell'Accademia. The Procuratie Vecchie were destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 16th century.
In 1538, the reconstruction of the Procuratie Vecchie was carried out by the architects Bartolomeo Bon and Jacopo Sansovino. The works were carried out within the framework of the Renovatio Urbis program of Doge Andrea Gritti. The building then acquired the appearance it has today.
