Garden of the Redentore

One of the most delightful gardens to visit in Venice is the Garden of the Redentore Church on the Giudecca island. The garden is an oasis of peace where you can enjoy a splendid view of the lagoon.

The garden has more than 2,500 plants, including cypresses, olive trees and old fruit trees. There is also a vegetable garden, a pond with water lilies and a pergola surrounded by vines, climbing roses, wisteria and bignonias.

This is the garden of the convent attached to the Redentore Church, the work of the great Venetian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. For centuries the garden was for the exclusive use of the Capuchin friars. Today, however, the garden is open to the public throughout the year, from Thursday to Saturday, thanks to its complete restoration in which the old workshops and greenhouse have been recovered.

The garden is designed to welcome birds and bees, to grow and produce vegetables, fruit, honey, oil, to obtain renewable energy and to recycle organic waste. It has a series of orthogonal paths on the sides of which grow various crops of Mediterranean species such as lavender, sage, rosemary and helichrysum. You can also find violets, strawberries and medicinal herbs (malva, chamomile, verbena and valerian) along with other trees (black cherry trees, persimmons, fig trees, almond trees and pomegranates).

In the centre of the Redentore's garden there is a pool of water embellished with lotus flowers and water lilies, while along the south-facing wall there are flowers intended to decorate the church altars: roses, lilies, zinnias and dahlias.

To the south of the garden is the convent's carpentry shop, the oil mill, the honey extraction room, the wool mill where dresses were made and the premises used to make a liqueur called mistrà. Today these spaces have been converted into exhibition spaces. Next to them is the Chapel of Meditation and the Café facing the Lagoon where dishes made with garden produce are served.

Opening Hours of the Redentore's garden

The Garden of the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer is open to the public on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at times appropriate to the seasons of the year. Until March 31, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
