Torcello Bell Tower

The Bell Tower of the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Torcello was built in 1008, during the reign of Bishop Orso I Orseolo, and is the oldest preserved in the Venetian Lagoon. It is also the only one of the nine bell towers of Torcello that still exists.

This is a free-standing, square bell tower, 55 metres high. It is a fine example of Venetian Romanesque architecture. The bells in the bell tower, which are still in use, date back to the 15th century and are an integral part of life on the island. The bell tower has an important historical role today, as it bears witness to the glorious past of the island of Torcello, which was one of the most populated areas of the Venetian lagoon before losing its importance to Venice.

The bell tower of Torcello offers a 360° view of the lagoon and is therefore worth climbing to the top. Entrance to the bell tower is 5 euros (2025).
