Torcello is an island in the northern lagoon of Venice. It was one of the oldest and most prosperous settlements in the lagoon, until its decline following the dominance of nearby Venice and the changing environmental conditions of the island. Currently the island has only twelve inhabitants, but the invaluable archaeological heritage that it still preserves makes it a popular tourist spot.
