Scarpagnino

Antonio Abbondi, known as Scarpagnino (1475? – 1549), was an Italian architect and sculptor. In 1505 he was appointed superintendent of the reconstruction of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, completed three years later. In 1505 he received the commission to build the Church of San Sebastián, a work of which he was the architect and director.

In 1514 a fire devastated the entire Rialto island, remembered as one of the most disastrous for the city of Venice. The most important building that burned was the church of San Giovanni Elemosinario, a temple that was under the patronage of the Doges. Many businesses and enormous quantities of merchandise also ended up burned. The reconstruction of the entire Rialto area was entrusted to Scarpagnino.

Another notable project, near Rialto, was the Palazzo dei Dieci Savi, a large porticoed palace, designed to be the headquarters of one of the main magistracies of the Serenissima. Scarpagnino also participated in the construction of the Church of San Fantin but, after his death, the direction of the works was entrusted to Jacopo Sansovino.
