Giambattista Tiepolo

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (Venice, 1696 - Madrid, 1770) was a Venetian painter. He was apprenticed to Gregorio Lazzarini and from 1717 he worked in Venice, where he was commissioned to decorate a large number of palaces and churches. Between 1756 and 1758 he was president of the Academy of Arts in Venice. His fame spread throughout Europe and he received commissions from the courts of France, England and Russia. From 1762 he was in the service of the Spanish court. Tiepolo's art constitutes the high point of 18th century Italian painting.

Among his children were the painters Giandomenico and Lorenzo Tiepolo.
