Giambattista Piazzetta
Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (Venice, 1682 - 1754) was a painter of the Venetian eighteenth century. He was the son of the sculptor and woodcarver Giacomo Piazzetta. After working for a time with his father, he continued his studies first in Venice, with Antonio Molinari, and from 1703 in Bologna, where the painter Giuseppe Maria Crespis had a great influence on him. From 1711, he settled permanently in Venice. Together with his young colleague and competitor Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Piazzetta was one of the most sought-after church painters of the Italian eighteenth century. He also painted portraits, genre paintings and made illustrations for books.
