Francesco Guardi
Francesco Guardi (Venice, 1712 - 1793) was a Venetian painter. He was the main representative of Venetian landscape painting. He was trained by his brother Giovanni Antonio and worked in his workshop until 1747, when he began to work on his own. In 1748 he entered the painting academy. At first Guardi painted mainly altarpieces, but later he concentrated on urban paintings influenced by Canaletto and Michele Marieschi. To achieve greater pictorial effect he did not stop only at topographical features, but also painted landscapes full of figures, which faithfully reproduce the splendor of Venetian life. He was a painter greatly admired by the impressionist painters.
