Ghetto and Jewish Museum

In 1509 the ghetto is the part of the city that was reserved for the Jews. They built their synagogues here, the first one was the German Synagogue.

It was followed by the Schola Canton, the Schola Italiana and the Schola Spagnola. The German synagogue houses the museum of Jewish art and contains many fine religious exhibits.

The term ghetto derives from the foundries that were found in the area in which the metal was gettato or smelted. In 1509 it became the part of the city that was reserved for the Jews. They built their schole or synagogues here, the first one was the Schola Tedesca (German Synagogue), which was built in 1528. It was followed by the Schola Canton and the Schola Italiana. The Schola Spagnola was rebuilt by Baldassare Longhena. The German synagogue houses the museum of Jewish art and contains many fine religious exhibits.

Jewish Museum of Venice

The Museum houses invaluable vestments, sacred furnishings, marriage contracts, several interesting silver objects and examples of Jewish ceremonial objects from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

The Jewish Museum of Venice is not merely an exhibition space, but a DIFFUSED MUSEUM, a unique architectural, museum and urban complex which includes the Museum, the synagogues and the entire Ghetto community.The Jewish Museum of Venice is located in Campo del Ghetto Novo, tucked between the city's two oldest synagogues. A small but invaluable museum, it was founded in 1953 by the Jewish Community of Venice.
