After the death of Antonio Canova, which took place October 13, 1822, his body was buried in Possagno (his hometown), while her heart was placed in an urn of porphyry kept at the Accademia in Venice. At the behest of Count Leopoldo Cicognara the monument was erected in the Basilica dei Frari with a model of one designed by Canova himself to Titian. The heart of the sculptor here was deposed in 1827.
