Welcome to Venice

Loggetta

Around the base of the Campanile of St. Mark a building has been erected, which is called the Loggetta; it is a work by Sansovino, and was added in the year 1540.

The principal front of this addition is embellished with 32 columns, and in the niches statues of bronze are placed, representing Pallas, Jupiter, Apollo and Mercury.

In the Basso-relievos among other subjects are to be seen, Venice personified as Justice, Venus as representing the island of Cyprus, and Jupiter as being the guardian of the kingdom of Candia.

The bronze railing protecting the entrance is worthy of attention.
